Welcome back to the final stages of the Grey Catbird WIP. As you can see there has been a drastic change in the background color!! Sometimes certain things get artistically triggered for some reason and in this case greens were speaking to me so off I went. Details 1, 2 and 3 show the process of application and as before its tedious but rewarding if the shade is tight and smooth. The first shade of green is Peacock Green and is layered over by Sap Green to create a vibrant overtone. I strategically removed certain areas of brown with the kneaded eraser but not too much as to leave a hint of tone. Shading over these areas leaves lighter grades of tone hence depth of field.
Having made this composition change added around 6 hours to the project but was definitely worth it!! Believe it or not once these two tones were complete I went over the whole area again with Sap Green just to deepen and amplify the richness of the background. Color pencil realism can only be achieved if it’s applied even and thick so white paper blemishes will not look real therefore hours of application is necessary making this medium time consuming but again rewarding. After all that work final detailing of the bird and branch went on for another few hours until I was happy the piece was at its best.
Below is the completed Grey Catbird drawing.
Professionally filmed by Mike Gaudaur at Quinte Studios.
