Pencil Realist Artist Doug comeau
“Visual art is an interpretation of life physically applied or removed from a surface, by an individual, using some form of medium. From a very young age my visual interpretation has always been focused on the intricate details of my subject using the medium of charcoal, graphite & color pencil. The idea of bringing an image to life on a flat surface absolutely fascinates me. Pencil to me is the finest medium on earth, allowing the creation of the most astonishing realism I could ever imagine. Each composition is a challenge only to feed the craving of what is yet to come.”

The Great Sphinx of Giza, near Cairo, is probably the most famous sculpture in the world. With a lion’s body and a human head, it represents Ra-Horakhty, a form of the powerful sun god and is the incarnation of royal power and the protector of the temple doors.
Dr. Robert M Schoch who earned his Ph. D. in Geology and Geophysics at Yale University in 1983 and others believe that the water erosion patterns couldn’t have happened in the dry Egyptian climate, but must have happened when the Egyptian climate was much rainier. This theory would push the construction of the sphinx back between 10, 000 and 12,000 B.C. Twice as old as mainstream archaeologists believe!! This theory to me makes perfect sense and the sphinx back at that period of time was facing the constellation of Lio and probably had a lion’s head proportionally correct to the body size!!
This charcoal drawing ventured over 200 hours to complete and was an incredible study in meticulous detail and shade transitions. Eraser highlighting transformed this piece into life and gave it the wow factor I was looking for. The sheer size of this drawing allows the viewer to feel the awe and power of this magnificent wonder of the world!

Fire in the Sky
This dragon composition depicts the instant he ignites his breath before the massive stream of fire. This charcoal piece represents approximately 180 hours of detailed blending and eraser techniques. Manipulating various grades of charcoal pencil when blending tones creates so much depth. To really accentuate highlights of light I use my kneaded and pencil erasers. What an awesome project!!

Queen Nefertiti Bust RECONSTRUCTED Charcoal Drawing
One of the most mysterious and powerful women in ancient Egypt, Nefertiti was queen alongside Pharaoh Akhenaten from 1353 to 1336 B.C. and may have ruled the New Kingdom outright after her husband’s death. Her reign was a time of tremendous cultural upheaval, as Akhenaten reoriented Egypt’s religious and political structure around the worship of the sun god Aten. Nefertiti is best known for her painted sandstone bust, which was rediscovered in 1913 and became a global icon of feminine beauty and power.

Savannah queen
The cheetah is the world's fastest land animal and can reach speeds up to 70 mph. A cheetah's claws don't retract when they run. Instead, they act like cleats to help the cheetah reach its top speeds. Once existing in Egypt, the Ancient Egyptians often kept the cheetahs and raised them as pets, and also tamed and trained them for hunting mammals.

Ruffles
A tribute to Ruffles and is characteristic wavy tail. He was the most recognized killer whale in the Pacific Northwest. Known for his 6-foot tall, ruffled edge dorsal fin, he was the patriarch J Pod, one of 3 pods that make up the endangered southern resident killer whale community. He doubled the usual age of a male from 30 to 60 years and survived many attempts at being captured in the 70s. He lived from 1970 to 2010. This rendition depicts one of his favorite beach combing areas off Vancouver Island.
